A practical guide to sizing backup power for your Starlink dish, router and Wi-Fi network, then testing the whole setup before an outage.

A Starlink connection still depends on electricity. During a grid outage, the dish, router and any additional Wi-Fi equipment need a reliable power source. A backup system should be sized for the whole network and the length of outage you want to cover.
Starlink says its Standard 4 kit typically averages 75–100 W, while the Mini averages 20–40 W. Those figures include the Starlink hardware, router, power supply and cables; actual use varies with conditions and activity. Check your exact model against Starlink's current power guidance, then measure your installation if you can.
Add every device that must stay online: an extra router, access points, network switch, hotspot controller and payment terminal. If any essential component loses power, customers may still lose access even while the dish is running.
A useful first calculation is:
Total running watts × desired hours = watt-hours needed by the equipment.
For example, a network drawing 100 W for six hours needs about 600 Wh delivered to the equipment. The battery must be larger than that simple figure because inverters have losses and batteries should not be planned around a full discharge. Battery specifications describe usable capacity differently, so have the installer check the chosen battery, inverter and startup loads together.
Use properly rated equipment, protected cabling and a qualified installer. Keep batteries and electronics in suitable, ventilated locations and follow the manufacturers' instructions.
Turn off mains power in a controlled test and confirm that the dish, router and Wi-Fi access points remain online. Check how long the system runs under a normal load, whether it recharges as expected, and whether it restarts cleanly after a long outage. For a business that cannot tolerate a lost link, consider a separate 4G connection as failover as well.
Reliable internet is a system: connectivity, local Wi-Fi and power all have to work together. ATR can assess your site and design a Starlink and backup energy setup around the hours of uptime you need. Tell us about your location.
